Beyonce gives the OK for VP Kamala Harris' presidential campaign song
I was surprised that Beyonce's 'Freedom' audio on Kamala Harris' trailer made me cry
Two-hundred and fifty-three. That’s the amount of interviews I’ve completed. Some are with celebrities. Most are with everyday professionals for news beats. I’ve been backstage to so many concerts I’ve lost count, and that’s not even going into press passes. I’ve stopped being fans of a couple celebrities after interviewing them and become ginormous fans of others when I was a casual fan before. I’ve interviewed my hip-hop heroes and childhood crushes, danced down a historic “Soul Train” line, and I’ve had a blast doing so (for the most part).
Regardless, it’s very rare that I become starstruck by anybody. Celebrities are just human beings with a permanent “Most Popular” picture in the yearbook. So I was a little caught off guard when my contact lenses became “moisturized” at the sight of presidential nominee/Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign video with Beyonce’s “Freedom” playing in the background.
I’m not a crazy member of the Beyhive — although I’ve stopped denying that I may be an honorary member. I still don’t think I’d lose my cool if I ever saw Beyonce. But there’s something about her stamp of approval that just adds an extra layer of … “hell yeah” on this campaign.
Plus, I love this song. I still remember Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce kicking water around like kids when they performed this song live at the MetLife Stadium and the 2016 BET Awards. It felt like freedom then and even more so now.
My YouTube response on Harris’ campaign video:
“I have been pretty chill about this news because I felt like Biden got bullied out of the race. But this commercial made my contact lenses wet. I guess I am not so chill after all. Blame it on Beyonce. Blame it on Kamala being my second-choice pick last time. Or Blame it on a fighting chance to GTF away from Trump and a prosecuting attorney reminding him how laws work.”
Kamala Harris was my second pick at the last election, but I was in favor of then-Vice President Joe Biden. After his previous presidential campaigns (1988 and 2008), his ego didn’t get the best of him. He smoothly served under the historical Barack Obama presidency for all eight years. White men who are comfortable answering to black men in leadership will always get a head nod from me. Historically and professionally, it’s still rare to see — even in 2024.

Between the ageism comments, conveniently overlooking that Trump has qualified for AARP for the past 28 years, Trump’s nonstop lying being overlooked and the way some Democrats were starting to bully Biden out, I both liked Kamala Harris as a pick and had an issue with the way she was tagged in.
Still, this campaign ad made me finally say, “OK, I must turn this page. I now have to exclusively focus on her.”
I sent my donation to her campaign shortly after I watched this. (The $47 suggestion is clever, by the way. Let’s make her the 47th president indeed.)
